Monsterism #47

Movie: The Passion of the Christ
Monster: Wall Demon

So I watched the Passion of the Christ again a few weeks ago, and had been meaning to post this along with some others earlier, but time and other things got in the way. I'm not sure how many out there saw this, or what they thought of it. I went and saw it at the movies with a friend's church group (I went to a Lutheran high school), which was an interesting experience. To me, this was a horror movie. Yeah, I kind of understand where Mel Gibson was going with it, but if you ask me, this film would not be at all out of place in the horror film section of your local blockbuster. Gorehounds would love this movie, and fans of The Exorcist might get a kick out of it too. Something that took me by surprise very early in the piece was the appearance of this demon. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this film, outside of some blood and the retelling of Christ's crucifixion. When this thing suddenly appeared, all my expectations of this film went out the window and I realised I was watching something I was totally unprepared for. I liked what I saw. I know it's a divisive movie, but I liked it. I wouldn't watch it over and over and certainly wouldn't own it though.
Tidbit: A friend of mine went and saw this and was born again. No shit. The power of Christ compelled him...

First off I'll just say how much I'm loving your blog each post, Trist! But anywho, yeah, I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it. I thought the production was great and I loved the "horror" scenes. I felt as a film it was really well done and I actually need to buy it on dvd. The scene where Judas is being chased by those demony kids were good and the scenes with Satan, sheesh.

Thanks man! It's good to know people are reading and enjoying! I'm sorry for having to put you through the hassle of signing up too, but them spambots suck balls!

You know, this film has the only thing I think I've ever turned away from in repulsion. When Jesus is being scourged and that chunk gets torn from his body. I watched it happen, thought it was awful and when the flailing continued I turned away. I sat through the bashing in Irreversible, but for some reason, this really got to me.

Hmm, to be honest, that scene never quite got me. I could see how it did for many people and lots of ppl I know always mention it and I admit it's pretty gruesome, but for some odd reason when I saw it, I didn't flinch... I really do think I;m a weird case...

And no worries bout havin me have to sign up! It really wasnt a big hassle at all! :)

Yeah, I don't know what it was about it. It's not that I flinched during it, I think it was more the fact that I honestly thought I'd seen enough (more out of boredom than disgust) when the flogging continued after the chunk of rib was torn out).

Weird cases make this world a wonderful place though dude! I wouldn't have it any other way!

Hey, you ought to hit up Pete's blog! I saw that photo of you and him at Newsarama! Really great shot, I'm sure he'd like to see it too!
