Tales #56

Peter Laird emailed me regarding the follow-up to last years Tales of the TMNT #36. The turtles once again take the backseat for April and Casey in this one, with a big new villain taking centre stage. A few tweaks needed to be made with a couple of bits of dialogue and some grammar (mine is rather poor if I get on a roll and just have to get ideas out as they come), along with a couple of slightly confusing panel descriptions. I can tell you now, this will be a brutal book. Casey will be pushed to his limits, and not just physically either.

Just came back from another extremely satisfying session of Dungeons and Dragons too! Love it! Such a nerd!

I also just realised: Tales #36's sequel happens exactly twenty issues later!

Forgetful Jones

I'd been meaning to post this as soon as I got back from the States, but a number of things just got in the way and I simply forgot, so my apologies there!

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who came up and spoke to me at the New York Comic Con. It was absolutely amazing being able to meet and speak to people who are just as enthusiastic as myself about the TMNT, comic books and the like, and it was even more amazing being on the other end of the table - actually signing everyone's books and doing sketches for people!

If anyone did get a sketch from me for their books or collections or what have you, could you give me a heads up, I'd love to be able to get a picture of them to post up here!

I'd also like to thank Eric, Mike, Jim and Peter for letting me tag along and making me feel part of the group! This was the first time I'd met these dudes, having only spoken to Eric a couple of times via email and Peter once before as an unashamedly gushing fanboy!

I also can't go without thanking Murph or Dan, Murph, without whom none of this would have been possible and Dan for his constant support since I started working on Turtles. Both are easily two of the coolest people I will ever know.

Also, I know this was posted over on Murph's blog, but this was such an indescribably huge moment for me, largely as a fan, but also as a professional. Being able to meet and hang with these dudes was huge for me, their work is what inspired me to get into comics and is something that's been with me since I was little, so on a professional and personal level this photo means a lot. It was also taken by Peter Laird, who's work means an incredible amount to me personally and serves as a constant source of inspiration in my own work. When I was first told that Peter would be at the NYCC, I was incredibly intimidated, but when I actually met him that melted away immediately, and it was a pleasure and an honour to get to know him over the course of the weekend (God knows how many times I read that book on the flight home!).


These are the dudes who shaped, and continue to shape, my career, and I can never thank them enough.

One final thing - I have a back-up story appearing in Tales of the TMNT #48. Raph fans keep an eye out! It's being illustrated Kennon James, and inked by Eric Talbot. The core story has been written by good friend Jake Black and features art by TMNT legend Jim Lawson.

Final Approval

Just got word back from Dan Berger at Mirage - Peter Laird gave final approval to my script for Tales of the TMNT #50! What does this mean? The art can finally start going ahead! Still not sure who will be working on it. From what I hear, Jim's deep into the Mikey mini-series (should be sick!) and still has some issues of Tales AND the ongoing in the works, so there's a chance someone else might be doing the art...

Never been so exhausted after anything in my entire life. Not the script revisions, no, no, no - last night I went and saw the Chemical Brothers with my cousin Kayne who I get to see once in a blue moon. Easily the most stunning show I've ever been to! Easily! Kayne, Jeremy, Cass and myself were cutting sick out there (general admin of course)! I was suprised to see how few people were getting into it - I mean really getting into it. The four of us were dancing mad crazy and everyone else, even the chicks seemed kind of... well... lame.

These two dudes came up to me afterwards and made the same observation, having recognised me as "one of those dudes going nuts out there!"

Massive props to Kayne for setting the whole night up and for making the trip down to Melbourne. He's off to India at the end of this week to begin six months worth of sound design on a film, which sounds like it'll be a total blast!

I'm going to try and get back into the habit of things too...

Monster: The Toy Factory Spook
Movie: Scooby-Doo

Much like the aforementioned Elmo in Grouchland, I was the only person above the age of 8 in the cinema when I saw this. I'm a mad crazy fan of the old cartoons - I hated Scrappy-Doo and I do a pretty good Shaggy. Anyway, say what you want about this movie, I loved it and though it wasn't the old 'toon, it was still a lot of fun! The monster designs were particularly cool, and I thought the opening sequence managed to capture the show perfectly. It's still a pretty creepy lookin' dude to!
