Monsterism #55

Monster: It/Wendigo
Movie: The Last Winter

My brother and I sat down for a bit of a fright fest by picking up The Last Winter, starring Hellboy's Ron Perlman and a slew of unknown actors. I'd seen this advertised in some comics recently and decided to pick it up when I saw it at the video store. This is a first because usually I don't trust horror movies advertised in comics -- usually they're straight to video/dvd stinkers. This was something different. This I wasn't expecting. It plays its horror card in a fashion somewhat similar to Alien if you were to mash it with something like Amityville Horror. You know something is wrong, something unnatural, but you don't know what until the shit really hits the fan, and even then, you don't quite know what. There are overtones of Native American/Alaskan folklore and mythology, which I always love, and when you see the monster (I'm not even sure if that's the right word) it really is very well done and very cool when it happens. The only problem I had was with what happens to Ron Perlman's character at the end. I didn't think it was necessary and it detracts somewhat from the mystique of the film and the creature/creatures therein.

Hmm, I never heard of this.

Guess what, Trist! Two nights ago I went to the city with my best friend and I took him to see The Dark Knight. While at the city, I also bought Sweeney Todd, Nightmare Before Christmas, Bad Seed, The Craft, and Sunset Blvd. (Okay, so Sunset Blvd isn't horror, but the woman in the movie is creepy) But yeah, my horror collection is growing! Also picked up Rosemary's Baby and Freaks last week. I was gonna pick up Repulsion but it was out and Eraserhead was damn 30 dollars!

i picked up the comic version of The Last Winter from Image a couple months back and really enjoyed it. I was curious to see the movie but i never heard about a release date, but apparently it's out already. I'll have to pick it up one of these days.

I thought I'd heard of this before (outside of the ads in the comics)! I'll have to see if I can find it. I always dig seeing how different things are when they're translated from one medium to another (especially when it's comics to movies).

Damn Greg! You piled up! I haven't splurged on movies like that in a long time (although I did just pick up/replace a bunch of CD's)! The woman from Sunset Blvd freaked me out man!

I'm trying to track down Evolution at the moment. It seems to have disappeared from Aussie shelves!

Thanks for that Mal! Got mine on order now!

Mollinger - it's meant to be playing at the Royal Melbourne Show. I know the prices are a bit of a bitch unless you're planning on making a full go of it, but that's where it's going to be at!

Tok - I've been meaning to, it's just been a bastard to track down at the local vid-store!
