Daily Monsterism Double Shot

Okay, so I missed one. To make up for it, here's a double shot of Monsterism...

Monster: Pygmy Mummy
Movie: The Mummy Returns

Okay, so, The Mummy Returns was a bit of a naff movie. It's one of those ones where you REALLY have to switch off to all reasonable logic and suspend all disbelief because the CGI is terrible and the story itself is nothing spesh. However, it does present a couple of really cool ideas, and the one I liked most was the Pygmy Mummies. They're these nasty little bastards hiding out in the oasis jungle, kinda what you'd get if you took the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park II and mixed them with Gremlins from, well... Gremlins. Anyway, these guys kicked arse and had a neat design. Thumbs up from me in a thumbs down movie (sorry if you liked it though).

Monster: Tetsuo
Movie: Akira

Few movies are as mind-bendingly awesome as Akira. It's the anime that pretty much set the standards for animation and is still unbelievable to watch. What's even more unbelievable is that the whole thing is completely unaided by CGI, which makes the animation even more incredible. Anyway, in the climax of the film, one of the characters mutates into a horrifying mess which is so masterfully animated and so bizarre in design that it pretty much sears itself into one's memory for eternity.

Peace!

I agree, Akira is an incredible work of art. Hard to believe it was animated in the 80's. Tetsuo's transformation at the end has always creeped me out. Disgusting.

Pygmy mummies were funny. I always think of the Velociraptors whenever I watch that scene. Glad I'm not the only one!
